Kilachand Hall Phase 2 – Construction Update – 5/12/23
General Project Information
- Daily Work Hours from 7 am – 3 pm.
- The Traffic Management Plan for the project has been approved by the Boston Transportation Department and is in place.
- Relocated accessible parking spaces posted for use on 6/29 (in front of 81 and 83 Bay State Road).
- Jersey barrier site containment in place, pedestrian walkway also in place and operational. The city sidewalk in front of Kilachand Hall is permitted to be used as part of the construction site limits.
- A Boston police detail is on site daily assisting with traffic control and safety.
- Bike lane is fully functional in front of Kilachand Hall.
- BU parking spots directly behind Kilachand Hall on Back Street remain a “no parking zone”. This will continue for the project duration to maintain an adequate drive lane for local traffic on Back Street and allow the construction team to safely contain a work area north of the dormitory.
Saturday, May 13th
- Work hours are from 7:00 am until 3:00 pm.
- Consigli: On site for supervision
- Safway: 1 Hoist Operator
- Safway: Removal of scaffolding at the north elevation on Back Street. (10 workers)
- Riggs: 5 laborers and 1 carpenter on site for clean-up and support.
- Mass Acoustics: On level 9, framing ceilings and soffits, and putting up sheetrock at the partitions. Tapers continue on level 8. (10 workers)
- Murphy: Above-ceiling rough on level 9, mechanical room panels, and generator build-out. (8 workers)
- Royal Steam: 4 pipefitters and 4 tin knockers on site to install ducts and variable refrigerant flow (VRF) piping on the 9th floor.
- Titan: 8 roofers and 4 tin knockers on site to work on the northeast and northwest roofs, continue with the metal panel, gutters, and downspouts.
Occupant Impacts: Week of May 15th
- This will be the last week with students occupying the building until the fall semester.
- With the study and exam period over, the team will continue with the removal of the exterior scaffolding. The north side of the building will be the focus starting on Saturday, 5/13, on the 8th floor. Suites near this work are -12, -14, -15 and -16.
- There is some corridor electrical work that is being coordinated with Housing and Residence Life to start after 8 am.
- Work not considered disruptive: Installation of new fire alarm devices and pulling antenna wire in the lighting alcoves. This will mainly be on floors 5-7.
During the Week of May 15th
- Royal Steam HVAC will be building out the level 9 mechanical room, VRF system piping, and ductwork on level 9.
- Murphy Electric will continue with rough work on levels 8 and 9 and overhead rough on level 9. They will also be building out electrical panels in the level 9 mechanical room and building out the new emergency generator.
- Mass Acoustics to continue with soffit and ceiling framing, as well as sheetrock on level 9. The level 1 stair core shaft wall installation will also get underway, as well as cleanup work on level 8 (sheetrock and taping).
- Cheviot Ceilings will start work on the various ceiling types on level 9.
- Titan continues with roof installation and miscellaneous detailing and tie-ins, as well as the installation of metal panels continuing on the west side.
- ThyssenKrupp Elevator mechanics to complete the adjusting of new cars.
- JC Floor and Tile will be finishing up the added tile scope in the renovation suite bathrooms.
- Riggs masonry is back on site to complete the façade punch list and stairwell parging.
- Egan Painters are continuing work with concrete blocks and railings in the stairwell.
- Consigli/Riggs team on site for cleaning, site support, and supervision.
