Goldman School of Dental Medicine – Construction Update – 5/10/19
During the weekend of May 11th
- The City of Boston has issued the permit allowing GSDM to temporarily close East Newton Street at its intersection with Albany Street on Saturday, May 11. This closure will allow crews to excavate for the installation of a new storm water drain line that will connect the School’s drain lines to the city’s storm water system in East Newton Street. Access to GSDM will not be affected by this operation.
- On Saturday, crews will also be pouring concrete at the bump-outs on floors two through seven on the south side (East Newton Street) of the building. The project will utilize the approved street shut-down to set up a concrete pump to complete this activity.
- A crane will arrive onsite Saturday morning to assist crews in setting a new prefabricated stairway in the northwest corner of the west addition. This stairway will serve as an egress stair from the new Mechanical Room in the basement.
- There will be no work onsite this Sunday, May 13, in recognition of Mother’s Day.
During the week of May 13th
- The work platforms at the south, east, and north sides of the existing GSDM building will continue to support crews working on the new façade finish system. Activities will include the installation of a new air/vapor barrier over the existing façade of the building on the north side, and drilling for the installation of clips used to hold the new façade finish system in place on all three sides (south, east, and north) of the building.
- In the newly demolished west connector spaces, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing crews will continue installing the infrastructure for new systems that will serve the seven-story west addition.
- Workers will also continue applying spray-on fireproofing material on the newly installed structural beams and columns in the seven-story west addition.
- Construction of masonry block walls will continue in the basement.
- Eversource continues to have a presence onsite and on Albany Street as they work to complete the new permanent power feed for GSDM.
- The installation of the workers-and-materials hoist on the south side of the west addition is now complete. The focus there will be on installing gates and landings on each floor to both keep workers safe from the building’s edges and allow access for workers and materials to each floor from the hoist. Construction of a temporary loading dock on the ground level at East Newton Street will also take place.
- Work is now under way to construct the exterior walls of the new additions. Starting on the north addition, crews will be installing metal stud framing which will eventually be used to attach the different exterior façade finish systems.
As a reminder to all, please be aware of all directional signage, as pedestrian travel paths may be altered at both the interior and exterior of the building. Your safety is imperative!
