Goldman School of Dental Medicine – Construction Update – 4/26/19
During the weekend of April 27
- Due to last weekend’s weather, the closure of East Newton Street to perform the steel-hoisting from that location was cancelled. The City of Boston, however, has re-issued the permit allowing GSDM to temporarily close East Newton Street at its intersection with Albany Street this Saturday, April 27. This closure will allow crews to set up a crane on the street to hoist structural steel framing needed for the area above the previous entrance to GSDM on East Newton Street. Access to GSDM will not be affected by this operation.
- Crews will be working Saturday to continue making final connections for the structural steel beams and columns at the seven-story west addition, and to prepare for more concrete pours on the upper floors of the west addition next week.
- Demolition crews will continue removing the wheelchair ramp that formerly served the East Newton Street entrance.
- Crews will continue backfilling the foundation wall along the north addition in anticipation of the removal of the sheet piles supporting the excavation.
- Workers will be using the mast climbers and the swing staging (work platforms) to continue the installation of a new air/vapor barrier over the existing façade of the building on its east and north sides.
During the week of April 29
- On Monday, April 29, a crane will be set up at 7 am to assist in the removal of the support of excavation system (SOE) along the north face of the two-story north addition. The first steel sheets (originally installed to maintain the integrity of the excavated foundation) are expected to be pulled mid- to late-morning. This operation will continue into Wednesday, May 1. The project team will be setting up equipment to closely monitor the vibrations associated with this operation to ensure that they do not exceed thresholds established by the geotechnical engineer.
- Crews will continue to make final connections on the structural steel columns and beams on the upper floors of the west addition. Weather permitting, the scheduled concrete pours for this week will be on the roof of the new west addition. As with last week’s pours, finishing these concrete slabs requires a longer time period, with work extending into the evening hours. The project team will start these pours at 7 am (per City of Boston permitted work hours) in an effort to be finished as early as possible in the evening.
- The swing staging (work platforms) at the south side of the building will continue to support crews working on the building façade in that location. Workers will also continue (via work platforms) the installation of a new air/vapor barrier over the existing façade of the building on its east and north sides. Occupants inside the GSDM building can expect to hear drilling this week, especially on the north side of the building, as the steel angles supporting the new window system are installed.
- In the newly demolished west connector spaces, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing crews will continue installing the infrastructure for new systems that will serve the seven-story west addition.
- Crews will continue to apply spray-on fireproofing material on the newly installed structural beams and columns in both the west and north building additions.
- Following the concrete pour for the roof of the west addition, crews will begin to install the roofing system, a first step towards reaching a major project milestone: having the addition fully weather tight.
- The build-out of the elevator machine room will begin in the west addition. This room will house all the equipment that will power and operate the two new elevators in the building.
As a reminder to all, please be aware of all directional signage, as pedestrian travel paths may be altered at both the interior and exterior of the building. Your safety is imperative!
