BU Children’s Center – Construction Update – 4/12/19
During the week of April 15:
- Construction and renovation activities kick off with efforts to make-safe existing utilities and services.
- Temporary lighting and power will be installed throughout the existing building.
- Existing smoke detectors will be swapped out with heat detectors. This will prevent false alarms from dust, while ensuring fire protection coverage throughout construction.
- Crews will cut, cap and drain down mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection systems ahead of demolition and abatement.
- Tree removal and pruning will take place on site on Wednesday 4/17 and Thursday 4/18.
During the week of April 22:
- Asbestos abatement will commence with erection of containment zones. Areas will be sealed off with plastic sheeting and duct tape while negative air machines fitted with HEPA filters will prevent contamination of adjacent areas.
- Technicians will remove asbestos-containing materials (ACM), place them in sealed disposal bags and store them in a lined container.
- Once completed, a hygienist will take air and surface samples to confirm the environment is free of any ACMs.
- All abatement work will be completed in strict accordance with all EPA, OSHA, state, federal and local regulations.
