Goldman School of Dental Medicine – Construction Update – 2/15/19
During the weekend of February 16:
- Starting at 5:30 p.m. Friday night, demolition and abatement will continue in the west connector space.
- On Saturday, crews will continue to remove formwork from the recently poured foundation walls at the two-story north addition.
- Also, on Saturday, in the newly renovated Student Admissions suite, crews will rotate the reception desk so that the receptionist faces the entry door and can more easily welcome people to the suite.
- On the second floor, workmen will replace a section of glass in room 207C and fill in a window opening in room 212.
- Starting at 5:30 p.m. Saturday night, demolition and abatement will continue in the west connector space.
During the week of February 18:
- At the two-story addition (on the school’s north side), formwork and rebar installation will continue in preparation for concrete pours in those areas. As the formwork is removed, areas around the newly placed concrete walls will be backfilled.
- Work on the new receiving area will continue, including the installation of steel railings, gates, the snowmelt system, and the loading dock lift. Rebar and formwork will be completed in time for the concrete slab to be poured at grade level on Friday.
- Removal of the building’s existing windows and precast concrete façade panels will continue on the west elevation.
- Crews will continue pulling telecommunication cables from 609 Albany Street to GSDM through the newly installed conduits.
- In preparation for the installation of structural steel for the new additions (on the school’s west and north sides) in early March,
- support piles will be installed in the northwest corner of the site to create a foundation on which a crane will be erected.
- Starting on Wednesday there will be activity on the roof of the canopy over the new patient and visitor entrance. Crews will be laying down plywood and barriers as protection for the new roofing system, as the canopy will be used for access to staging that crews will need to install the new façade in the upcoming months.
Toward the end of the week, removal of the earth-retention system (SOE) sheets along the west side of the building, between GSDM and Newton Pavilion, will get under way. The process for removal will be similar to the way in which the sheets were installed last June: A crane will pull up on the sheets, vibrating them to help shake them free of the ground.
The project team will be closely monitoring the vibration associated with this operation to ensure that it does not exceed thresholds originally established by the project’s geotechnical engineer. We anticipate that this work will be completed by February 26, pending weather and project scheduling requirements.
We appreciate your patience as we pursue the work elements essential for renovating and building the new addition to GSDM.
As a reminder to all, please be aware of all directional signage, as pedestrian travel paths may be altered at both the interior and exterior of the building. Your safety is imperative!
