New Balance Field Construction Activity for the Period of October 15 – October 19
Dear Colleagues & Neighbors:
In order to better inform the Boston University community and our neighbors living and working near or on Babcock Street, beginning Friday, September 28, 2012 and continuing until the construction of the New Balance Field at 278 Babcock Street is completed in Summer 2013, the Boston University Facilities Management & Planning team will send out weekly updates of the activities taking place on site, especially those that may affect you directly.
Anticipated construction activities for the week of October 15 – October 19:
- Site Work: Already underway and continuing for the next several weeks is site work, which includes excavators, cranes and a pile driving rig. The parking lot asphalt will be stripped, and excavation for and installation of the Pressure Injected Footings (PIFs) will continue. You can expected general construction noise from the equipment, some potential ground vibration from installing the PIFs, and an increase in construction traffic (concrete trucks, dump trucks, etc..) on the surrounding streets. Hauling soils continue and truck activity for the removal of the excavated soils will be coordinated and Police details will be present to help manage traffic flow.
- Exterior Building Abatement: The blasting of the exterior walls has continued, and will be ongoing for the next few weeks. The crew will continue working on the north elevation and then move east onto the Babcock Street elevation and finally around to Gardner Street and the south elevation. As sections of the building are completed, the staging will be removed. You can expect a high noise level during the blasting operation. As before, the hours of operation for the blasting will be 7:00am to approximately 5:00pm, Monday through Friday.
- Interior Demolition: Select interior demolition will occur concurrently with the blasting of the exterior. There are no anticipated noise/traffic impacts with these activities.
- Gardner Street Utility Disconnections: The disconnection of utilities feeding the 278 Babcock Street building (water, sewer, etc…) from Gardner Street will continue through this week. When utility work in the street is underway, it is likely that thru traffic on Gardner Street may be affected, however, local traffic to Babcock Towers Garage and Planned Parenthood Garage will always be maintained. There will be police details present during any street work.
