BU Linux is installed via the campus network; we currently do not provide an entirely CD-ROM-based installation process. However, you will need to have a boot CD containing the initial install program. You can either come to the Office of Information Technology (at 111 Cummington St) and we can give you a CD for $5, or you can make one yourself. Download the current boot CD image and burn it to a CD-R. Make sure to use your CD-writing software's "burn from ISO image" or "create from disc image" feature — don't just put the file on the disc. The older BU Linux 3.0 (Doolittle) release is also still available for download. Get the Doolittle boot CD image, and as above, burn it to a CD-R. Doolittle also allows installation from a floppy disk, which you can download from the same place. You'll need at least bootdisk.img and drvnet.img. You can write these image files to a floppy using dd under Linux or RawWrite in Microsoft Windows. BU Linux 4.0 (Bossanova) does not support floppy-based installs. Installation is simple: just boot your system from the install CD or floppy, and follow the on-screen instructions. If you need more help, check out our Bossanova installation step-by-step guide. |
