Charles Vlahakis

 

In his own words: “My time in the City Planning program really helped cement the analytical mindset that is key to what I do every day. Without the background and context I learned from the program, as well as the extremely practical courses which involved creating reports and sifting out important details, I think my job would be far more difficult to do.”

Charles works for the Codman Square Neighborhood Development Corporation in Dorchester as the Small Business Development Specialist. His work is multi-faceted and includes: supporting local merchants and promoting the local business district; assisting prospective entrepreneurs in developing their ideas; and working at a higher level to improve the structures in place to promote economic development in and around South Dorchester. Examples of his work include helping a local woman open a soul food restaurant, teaching small business courses to those looking to start their own businesses, and being a key person in the development of a jobs hub / incubation lab in the area.

Charles is particularly grateful to the Planning program for the connections it offered, including an internship that directly led to his current position.
