Guest lecturer Thomas Vitolo will present to class UA 617: Actionable Sustainability on the potential for web-connected personal electronics to affect demand side management of energy consumption. This exciting near-future world will allow for greater flexibility in production and enable renewable energy sources to continue to grow toward a greater share of the grid.

Guest lecturer Travis Sheehan will present to class UA 617: Actionable Sustainability on the Boston Community Energy Study, which explores the potential for local energy generation, district energy and microgrids. The Study is a collaboration between The Mayor’s Office of Environment Energy and Open Spaces, the Boston Redevelopment Authority, MIT Sustainable Design Lab and MIT Lincoln Laboratory. About the speaker: Travis is the Energy Fellow at Boston Redevelopment Agency, the City's economic development and planning agency. Travis has worked for the last 2 years to develop energy planning capabilities, including a regional infrastructure studies, policy development scenario planning workshops, and trade article - focusing on innovative energy technologies. Before joining the BRA, Travis worked in environmental consulting and development advisory for projects in the US and India. He graduated with a double-masters from MIT in energy planning.

Mark Pasnik, AIA, LEED AP, will present on the historical context, buildings, and architects that defined Boston during the radical transformation of the 1960s. Pasnik offers a compelling view on the story of Boston as it underwent controversial urban renewal programs and monumental architecture works to change into a modern, thriving city.
