Carlos Rodriguez-Diaz

Carlos is an academic activist, public health scholar, and academic leader whose work centers community-engaged and culturally grounded strategies to address disparities in HIV, sexual health, and broader public health outcomes across the United States, Puerto Rico, and the Caribbean. Through scholarship, policy engagement, and advocacy, he advances equitable health systems and social justice–oriented public health practice.

Dr. Rodriguez-Diaz’s research focuses on populations made vulnerable by racism, colonialism, homophobia, transphobia, incarceration, and HIV stigma. His work spans Puerto Rico, the continental United States, and the Caribbean, where he leads and collaborates on funded studies to increase uptake of HIV prevention interventions (including PrEP), strengthen health and social services for transgender communities, and improve primary care services for Latinx and migrant populations.

His scholarship has been published in leading peer-reviewed journals, including The Lancet, JAMA, and the American Journal of Public Health. He currently serves as Associate Editor for Annals of Medicine, Sexuality Research and Social Policy, and the Puerto Rico Health Sciences Journal.

Beyond academia, Dr. Rodriguez-Diaz serves as President of the Board of Directors of Coai, Inc., a community-based organization providing health services to LGBTQ communities in Puerto Rico.
