Fall Semester – 25 hours per week (15 credits)
Integrated with English as a Second Language students from a variety of language backgrounds, regions, and cultures, students will take three classes at CELOP.
- English for Academic Purposes (core) 15 hours per week
Level-appropriate skill work in preparation for successful academic performance in spring courses at the CAS and MET. The courses are:
- Speaking & Listening (6 hours per week)
- Reading & Writing (9 hours per week)
- Theme course (elective) 5 hours per week
Content course in topics from the chosen theme. Listening, speaking, reading, and writing practiced in the content area of students’ theme choice. Elective choices are divided into two 6-week classes. Waseda students After 6-weeks, students choose a different set of electives.
- Readings in the Social Sciences (Term A)
- Readings in the Natural Sciences (Term B)
- Content or skill course (elective) 5 hours per week

Spring Semester – 12-15 hours per week (12 credits)
In the Spring Semester students will take courses according to their score on the ITP TOEFL when tested at the end of the Fall Semester:
Option 1. Students attaining a TOEFL score of 574+ (ITP) / 84+ (iBT) will take:
- 2 CAS courses* (8 credits)
- 1 MET course* (4 credits)
* at least one of the three courses must be in the student’s specialization (Social Sciences, Natural Sciences, or Humanities)
Option 2. Students attaining a TOEFL score of 550-573 (ITP) / 80-83 (iBT) will take:
- CELOP core English program, 15 hours per week (9 credits)
- 1 MET course (4 credits) in the student’s specialization (Social Sciences, Natural Sciences, or Humanities)
Option 3. Students attaining a TOEFL score below 550 (ITP) / 80 (iBT) will take:
- CELOP core English program, 15 hours per week (9 credits)
- 2 CELOP content elective classes, 10 hours per week (6 credits)
As higher-level CAS and MET courses usually have perquisites for registration, students should not expect to be able to take all courses within a single field of study in the Spring Semester. Students should expect to take classes in a variety of departments.
