CAS IN 399
Applications for summer 2026 open on February 12, 2026. Please read the page below to learn more about eligibility guidelines and our required info session.
Course Overview
CAS IN 399 is a variable-credit, asynchronous online, pass/fail course for CAS undergraduates who are required to earn credit while interning off campus. Taught by EL Connector staff, the course complements the experiential learning you’ll be doing in your internships through critical self-reflection and professional development.
Interested students are responsible for securing your own internship placement and for submitting a complete application. Enrollment in CAS IN 399 is limited and reserved for students who are required to be registered for course credit in order to intern. Only students whose applications are approved receive permission to register for CAS IN 399. Read more about the application process and eligibility requirements below.
Applications for summer 2026 will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the course is full. You are encouraged to apply as soon as an internship offer is secured. International students must apply in time to have their CPT request approved before starting the internship. (CPT requests take approximately 10 business days to review.) No students will be admitted to IN 399 after the summer add deadline on June 2, 2026.
We are thrilled to announce that as of summer 2026, the University will waive tuition charges for IN 399 during Summer Term. However, please note that you will be responsible for the Student Services Fee (usually $75). Consult the Summer Term tuition and fees page for more information.
IN 399 is a variable–credit course that can be taken for either 2 or 4 credits during Summer Term. You will be registered for the appropriate number of credits based upon how many hours per week you will be interning. (If you intern 20 hours per week or fewer, you will be registered for 2 credits. If you intern more than 20 hours per week, you will be registered for 4 credits.)
Beginning in Fall 2025, credits associated with IN 399 do not count towards the graduation requirements in CAS. However, in certain cases, CAS IN 399 may be repeated for credit. If you have taken the course previously and would like to register again, please email casel@bu.edu to inquire about your eligibility.
International students should not take more than 3 total semesters of internship courses that support work authorization (CPT) for off-campus positions. Please contact your ISSO advisor for more information.
Course Format
IN 399 is a variable-credit, asynchronous online summer course that students take alongside an approved internship during the fall, spring, or summer semester.
The course is run through Blackboard and divided into 6 instructional modules. Each module is designed to cover 1/6th of the internship’s total duration and must be completed in the order assigned. Assignments include reading and writing exercises as well as video recordings.
When offered in the summer, IN 399 can accommodate students with internships of varying lengths, from 6 weeks to 12 weeks, that fall within the dates of Summer Term (May 19-August 7, 2026). Depending on the length of your internship, completing each module will take anywhere from 1 week (for a 6-week internship) to 2 weeks (for a 12-week internship). (Students with permission to intern for longer than 12 weeks must still complete their coursework within the 12-week Summer Term.) It is the students’ responsibility to track your own progress through the online course and to ensure that you are completing a new module every 7 to 14 days, based on the length of your internships.
Grading for IN 399 is pass/fail. To successfully pass the course, students are expected to complete all instructional modules successively and in a timely manner; have 100% attendance at the internship site; and demonstrate engagement with the course material throughout the duration of the internship.
