Where are you from?

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Why did you choose the Biochemistry & Molecular Biology major?

I joined BU in Sargent College, but after taking and succeeding in some intro science courses, I wanted to pursue a more natural science-based curriculum. I was particularly drawn to BMB for its emphasis on research, both in and out of the classroom.

What kind of research have you done?

I do organic synthesis research with the Schaus Lab, and my project is related to medicinal chemistry! I’m currently making analogues of a small molecule inhibitor of hepatocellular carcinoma. In the past, I have done chemical education research with Dr. Loy.

How did you get your research position?

For organic synthesis, I cold emailed labs that had medicinal chemistry projects, because I wanted to learn more about the intersection of chemistry and medicine. For chemical education, I reached out to Dr. Abrams asking if I could help make content for chemistry courses. Dr. Loy was looking to incorporate videos into the CH203 curriculum, so we ended up working together!

How has your research tied into your classroom learning?

Learning more about actual synthesis in the Schaus Group helped me succeed in CH214! Working with Dr. Loy helped earn me a position teaching discussions for CH204/214. My research experiences have made me a more confident student.

What extracurriculars do you participate in?

I’m the vice president of ASBMB at BU! I help plan events like professor talks and study nights, and we frequently collaborate with the BMB program. I volunteer at Boston Children’s Hospital. I’m also involved in Greek Life! Beyond that, I focus on research and teaching CH204/214 as a discussion leader.

What is your favorite BU memory?

Some of my favorite memories are during my time as an LA for CH101/102. One time after a discussion section, a student said to me “thank you, Miss Anya,” in the most sincere voice. It made me laugh because we are peers, but it also warmed my heart and solidified my interest in education.

Favorite BMB-related course and why?

My favorite course was CH203, organic chemistry 1. It was the course that made me want to switch to the BMB major because I wanted to spend more time in labs!

Favorite dining spot on or around campus?

Pavement is my go-to for matcha lattes! I like Maluken Sushi near South Campus as well.

Best place on campus to study or relax?

The cafe in the Law building has the largest windows that overlook the Charles, and it’s a great study space!

What’s one BU tip you wished you’d known sooner?

We have free access to so many places in Boston: the MFA, ISG, ICA, and BSO! I’m sure there are more, but I wish I knew about these sooner!

What are your post-graduation plans?

I’m a pre-med student and will be applying to medical school this summer. I hope to stay in Boston during my gap year and work in clinical research or as a medical assistant!
