EVENTS: Spring 2014 Geddes Japanese Movie Series

The Dept. of MLCL, Boston University Center for the Study of Asia, the Boston University’s Geddes Language Center, and the Japanese Student Association are pleased to present the Spring 2014 Japanese Film Series. Films will be screened at the Geddes Center on the fifth floor of CAS starting at 6:30 p.m. All films will be subtitled. TThe rest of the dates and showings are as follows:
2/19 – お葬式 The Funeral (1986) Length: 02:04:00
A comedy about Japanese society in transition: the age-old Buddhist rituals prove too complicated for a modern husband and wife when her father dies.

The adventures of a 1920’s bush pilot who just happens to look like a humanoid pig.

3/19 – 家族ゲームFamily Game (1983) Length: 01:46:00
A sendup of the stereo-typical Japanese family: dad is a salaryman jerk, unable to relate to anyone; mom is a hopeless housewife; the older son is a moderate academic success; but the younger son is a rebellious goof-off for whom a tutor must be hired. The tutor, played by the prototypical bad-boy actor Matsuda Yusaku, proceeds to blow the entire family apart (Matsuda’s role is modeled on the myth of Susano-o no mikoto, the renegade deity who figures in the Kojiki)

4/2 – 二郎は鮨の夢を見るJiro Dreams of Sushi (2012) Length: 01:22:00
Follows Jiro Ono, an 85-year-old sushi master and owner of Sukiyabashi Jiro, a Michelin three-star restaurant, on his continuing quest to perfect the art of sushi. The film also profiles Jiro’s two sons, both of whom are also sushi chefs.
