The story of pentecostal mission is usually one of sweeping, global expansion. On the ground, however, pentecostal mission was a complex, often fraught, interplay of local, regional, and transnational dynamics. Using spatial and network analysis tools, Mayfield examines the pentecostal movement of Hong Kong prior to World War II to show how pentecostal mission developed over time in response to the ebbs and flows of the local and the global. The event will take place at 12:00pm-1:15pm EST.
About the Speaker:
Alex Mayfield is currently researching the theology and practices of Pentecostal missionaries in Hong Kong during the first half of the 20th century. This research combines traditional historical methods with newer, data-driven digital methods. His broader research interests include global Pentecostal and Charismatic movements, ecumenical theology, mission history in Asia, and the development of Christianity in China in the modern period.
