CALL FOR PAPERS: Northeast Chapter of the Society for Ethnomusicology 2013 Meeting

The Northeast Chapter of the Society for Ethnomusicology invites ethnomusicology students and faculty as well as scholars in related disciplines to submit abstracts for the NECSEM annual meeting to be held on Saturday, April 20, 2013, at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine. Proposals for individual papers, panel discussions and lecture/performance demonstrations are welcome. We also invite proposals for short presentations by musical ensembles (please include an audio attachment or CD of one or two pieces). The President of NECSEM invites proposals as well for a roundtable discussion on the following topic: The Role of Sacred Music, Sound, Text, and Syllables to Instill a Sacred Experience. Students and scholars in all branches of music scholarship and related disciplines are encouraged to participate. Papers will be limited to a maximum of 20 minutes. An abstract (250 words maximum), together with anticipated audio/visual and other technological requirements, should be emailed by Friday, March 8, 2013 to the Local Arrangements Chair Michael Birenbaum Quintero at the following address: mbq@bowdoin.edu. Please put NECSEM 2013 Proposal in the Subject Header. Proposals for the Roundtable discussion should be sent to both Brita Heimarck (britaheimarck@gmail.com) and Michael Birenbaum Quintero (mbq@bowdoin.edu).

Please include the following in your proposal in this order:

  • your name
  • contact information (email and phone number)
  • institutional affiliation (students, please indicate if you are at the graduate or undergraduate level)
  • a title for your proposed project
  • a 250 word (maximum) abstract
  • anticipated audio/visual or other technological/special requirements

Participants with accepted proposals will be notified by March 25, 2013.

We are encouraging NECSEM members and presenters to arrive Friday April 19 and we will arrange a reception or group dinner to take place Friday evening.

Chapter prizes: NECSEM now awards two memorial prizes for outstanding papers presented by students at the chapter meeting: The Lise Waxer Prize (undergraduate) and the James T. Koetting Prize (graduate). Students whose proposals have been accepted may apply for the appropriate prize by submitting their completed paper via email to Brita Heimarck at britaheimarck@gmail.com by Wednesday, April 10, 2013 (please indicate the prize for which you are applying in the subject header).
