A Final Look Back at BU’s 151st Commencement

BU’s All-University Commencement is the biggest event of the academic year. This year’s ceremony, held May 19 on Nickerson Field, drew an estimated 3,700 members of the Class of 2024 and 20,000 guests. To record it all for posterity, BU photojournalists Cydney Scott, Jackie Ricciardi, and Janice Checchio, associate creative director of photography, along with eight freelance photographers, roamed the campus, from Marsh Plaza to the robing room to Nickerson Field, to capture all the pomp and emotion of the day. The result? A whopping 18,000 photos.
We’ve pulled together 50 of the best, including photos of best-selling author and journalist David Grann (GRS’94, Hon.’24), this year’s Commencement speaker, whose tale about an obsessive giant squid hunter offered some important life lessons; students protesting for better conditions for BU graduate students and residence life workers and in condemnation of Israel’s actions in Gaza; Kenneth Freeman, BU president ad interim, who got a big round of applause for leading the University this past year; and Bean, the University’s new community service dog, whose appearance on the field drew smiles and lots of oohs and ahhs.
Take a look.
