A Special Holiday Video Message from All of Us at BU Today
Artist “Big Sam” Weinberger is known for creating impressive large-scale murals that you sometimes need to crane your neck to appreciate, like his Big Optimism mural in West Palm Beach, Fla., which stands 35 feet tall and is 150 feet wide (think of the side of a three-story building), and closer to home, the 5-foot-tall, 100-foot-long mural that pays tribute to frontline workers at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center in Brighton.
But for our annual holiday video, we asked Big Sam (CFA’21), who himself stands nearly seven feet, to direct his gaze downward. Our request: design and paint a holiday tableau on a famous denizen of the BU Beach: the BU Rock. As he worked on a recent cold winter day, he was joined by the BU Allegrettos a cappella group, who performed their arrangement of Andrew Huang’s modern holiday classic “You Make Winter Warm.” Take a look.
And from all of us at BU Today, happy holidays!
Find Big Sam on Instagram @bigsampaints, and check out the Allegrettos Instagram @buallegrettos and their Spotify channel at “BU Allegrettos.” Our thanks to Big Sam and to the Allegrettos: Joel Em (Questrom’23), Clara Haymon (CGS’22, CAS’24), Kaz Katoh (CGS’21, COM’23), Loulou Ojjeh (CGS’22, COM’24), Jonathan Ran (CAS’25), Massimo Siracusano (ENG’24), Melinda Stackpole (Sargent’23), Zeya Wu (CGS’22, CAS’24), Bryant Kessie (CFA’25), Emre Yalcindag (CAS’24), Luke Yanosy (CAS’25), Sarah Winston (CAS’23), Anoushka Thakur (CAS’23), Isabella Basler (Questrom’25), and Renee Torio (CAS’24).
