It’s farewell to the Year of the Rat and hello to the Year of the Ox as the world prepares to celebrate Lunar New Year. The most important holiday in China, it’s also celebrated in Korea, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, and Indonesia. Here in the United States, it’s mostly observed on the first day of the New Year, which in 2021 is February 12. The 15-day holiday is also known as Spring Festival, and it coincides each year with the first new moon of the unisolar calendar.
Lunar New Year traditionally kicks off with a reunion dinner, where family members come together to enjoy customary foods and culminates with the Lantern Festival, a day for family reunions and marked by events like moon-gazing, lion dances, riddles, and eating rice balls. This year’s Lantern Festival is on February 26.
In the animated video above, we offer five top things to know about Lunar New Year.
