Forget the fizzy soda and bottled water served up at movie concession stands. Instead, reach for some fine, expert-selected wines at tonight’s screening of the 2004 Oscar-winning film Sideways at the Coolidge Corner Theatre.
The event, the second in a four-part Wine & Film Series, is cohosted by Wine Enthusiast magazine to coincide with its May 2015 Wine & Film issue. Sommelier-led complimentary wine tastings follow each screening, making this an immersive experience that is a must for wine lovers.
Tonight’s feature, Sideways, tells the story of comically mismatched friends, Miles (Paul Giamatti), an amateur wine enthusiast and failed writer, and Jack (Thomas Haden Church), a womanizer on the prowl for one final hookup before his wedding. The two embark on a weeklong road trip through California’s wine country. Before you can say Cabernet, the two find themselves drowning in both wine and women. Based on a novel of the same name by Rex Pickett, the film earned its director and writer, Alexander Payne, a 2005 Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay.
Other scheduled screenings in the series include A Year in Champagne, a documentary that takes viewers to the historic French province of Champagne for a rarely seen look at the production of everyone’s favorite celebratory libation. Martine Saunier, a groundbreaking importer credited with introducing American palates to French wines, guides viewers on this bubbly behind the scenes tour. (She is also one of the film’s senior producers). That film screens on June 4 at 7 p.m. The series closes with a screening of Autumn Tale, a 1998 pastoral romance set in a vineyard in France’s Rhone Valley and directed by the celebrated French New Wave director Eric Rohmer.
The Wine & Film Series screenings take place at 7 p.m. at the Coolidge Corner Theatre, 290 Harvard St., Brookline, Mass. Scheduled films include Sideways (tonight), A Year in Champagne (Thursday, June 4), and Autumn Tale (Thursday, June 11). The event is 21 and over. Tickets are $15 for general admission or $12 for Coolidge Theatre members and can be purchased in advance online.
Via public transportation, take any Green line trolley to Coolidge Corner.
