This past weekend, Americans celebrated the Fourth of July by consuming an estimated 155 million hot dogs and washing them down with upwards of $190 million worth of beer. If you’re one of the many who overindulged and looking to get in shape without breaking the bank, you’re in luck. Today kicks off the Esplanade Association’s Healthy, Fit & Fun program.
Now in its fifth year, the program offers free fitness classes on a weekly basis designed to appeal to people of all ages and abilities. Running through September 12, the classes include old favorites like zumba, sunset yoga, and CrossFit along with some new classes (tai chi) and the revival of the program’s popular Dancing in the Park event. The Esplanade Association partners with sponsors like Athleta, CLIF MOJO, and the Reebok Foundation, and with different organizations around Boston to offer the expert-led classes.
Today, you can spend your lunch break taking part in Healthy Fit & Fun’s community walk. The 2.5-mile power walk—held each Monday—starts at the Hatch Shell at noon, giving participants the chance to get outside and enjoy the park.
Other events vary in intensity and structure. The tai chi class, led by The Boston Kung Fu Tai Chi Institute, gives participants a chance to improve their mind, body, and spirit while relieving stress, while the weekly CrossFit classes offer a more hardcore fitness regimen. Dancing in the Park will feature a different style of dance each week—from salsa to swing—as experts from Arthur Murray Dance Center help you find your rhythm. Those who want the fun and high energy of dance plus a more intense workout will find it in the Zumba sessions, which set resistance and interval training to funky Latin beats. The Marathon Sports Run Club gives runners of all levels and ages the chance to lace up and hit the pavement with 3-, 5-, or 8-mile group runs.
Healthy, Fit, & Fun classes are free and open to the public (people of all ages and abilities are welcome) Mondays through Thursdays through September 12. The Community Walk meets Mondays at noon at the Hatch Shell. Zumba takes place Tuesdays at 6 p.m. at the Hatch Shell. Sunset Yoga is held Wednesdays at 6 p.m. at Fiedler Field. The Run Club warms up at 6:00 p.m. every Wednesday at the Marathon Sports Boston store, 671 Boylston St., followed by group runs at 6:30 p.m. Tai Chi takes place Thursdays at Fiedler Field at 9:30 a.m. CrossFit classes are held Thursdays at 6 p.m. at Fiedler Field.
