  1. The folks in Residence Life are very helpful in what to and what not to pack… The coffee maker and hot plate should be left at home, as they may still be against university safety policies. Be sure to check before you pack any of these devices.

  2. if you’re living with someone new and/or random this year, bring stuff that preempts any problems: earplugs (in case they snore), cleaning supplies (in case they’re a slob), and high-quality headphones (in case they’re loud).

  3. One of the best things I brought with me to my freshman dorm was a basic tool kit (hammer, pliers, screwdriver with interchangeable bits). Once people knew that I had one, I was meeting people all over the building.

  4. Scissor, tape, stapler. Everyone who got a package delivered or printed out something had to stop by my room for my scissor or stapler.

Also, basic OTC remedies for cough, cold, and upset stomach. Once you realize you need them, you’re too sick to go to the store. Some cold medicines are not sold to minors, so if you’re under 18, you won’t be able to buy any for yourself.
