One of Boston’s most popular summertime traditions—Free Friday Flicks—continues tonight at the Hatch Shell with a screening of the heartwarming 2012 animated film Wreck-It Ralph. Grab a friend, a picnic basket, and a blanket or lawn chair, and head to the banks of the Charles River—no wallet necessary.
Nominated for both a Golden Globe and an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, Wreck-It Ralph is the inventive story of video game villain Wreck-It Ralph (voice of John C. Reilly), who longs to be a hero, like his game’s perfect character, Fix-It Felix, Jr. However, when he sets out to reach his good-guy goal, his mission wreaks havoc on the entire arcade where he lives. Watch as Ralph travels between games and attempts to avoid a disaster that could mean “Game Over.”
The film also features the voices of comedian Sarah Silverman, Jack McBrayer (30 Rock), and Jane Lynch (Glee). New York Times film critic A. O. Scott describes the film as a “93-minute blast of color, noise, ingenuity, and fun.”
Now in its 28th year, Free Friday Flicks, presented by WBZ NewsRadio 1030 and the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation, offers classic and popular family-friendly films. Tonight’s showing of Wreck It Ralph begins at sundown, 8:16 p.m., giving viewers two spectacular shows to watch: the movie itself, as well as a gorgeous sunset. A large crowd is anticipated, so be sure to arrive early to snag a prime spot on the lawn.

By public transportation, take an MBTA Green Line trolley to Arlington station. Walk along the Public Garden on Arlington Street to Beacon Street. Cross over Beacon Street and take the Arthur Fiedler Footbridge over Storrow Drive to the Hatch Shell, about a 10-minute walk.
