Construction Slated for St. Mary’s Street
Work will necessitate road closing

Brookline’s Department of Public Works will complete two stages of construction on St. Mary’s Street as part of the final phase of a court-mandated sewer separation program. The work is expected to last three weeks, but is dependent on the weather.
The first phase—currently under way—involves nighttime construction at the intersection of Commonwealth Avenue and St. Mary’s Street, and is expected to be completed by this Friday, January 18. The project will require lane restrictions on the inbound side of Comm Ave (headed towards Kenmore Square) only. The construction will take place nightly from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.
The second part of the project involves installation of a new sewer line extending from Comm Ave to the front of 15 St. Mary’s St., home to College of Engineering offices. That work is expected to begin next Monday, January 21, and run through February 8. The street will be closed to vehicles, but remain open to pedestrians. Work on this phase of the construction will take place daily from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The two-year, $25.4 million project was ordered by the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection and involves separating storm drains from sewer lines to prevent sewage from seeping into the Charles River. The project is being overseen by the Town of Brookline and is being funded by the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA).
Drivers and bicyclists should use caution traveling in the affected areas. Boston and Brookline Police will be on hand to assist with traffic and pedestrian safety.
The project should have little effect on students, says Michael Hathaway, BU assistant vice president for campus planning and construction. “The reason for this message is to make people aware of what’s going on, and urge them to use care and caution.”
