Spring Cleaning for a Cause
Eco-friendly swap sponsored by Women’s Resource Center
According to the Clean Air Council, Americans discard nine million tons of clothes every year, but only two million tons are recycled. And that’s just clothing. Think about all the used textbooks, lamps, furniture, and bric-a-brac students will be disposing of in the coming weeks. Don’t want to send it to a landfill? You’re in luck.
The Women’s Resource Center is hosting an Eco-friendly Odds and Ends Swap tomorrow, Saturday, April 16, and Sunday, April 17, from noon to 5 p.m. at the center. “We want this to be an annual event where students can get rid of things that others can still find useful,” says center assistant manager Molly Rokosz (CAS’14, COM’14). She and assistant manager Gabrielle Newton (CAS’14) have designed the swap so that no money is exchanged. All are welcome, men included. Attendees are encouraged to bring in whatever clothes, shoes, books, jewelry, and appliances they no longer want.
Here’s how the swap works. Students can drop off items today at the WRC (in the GSU basement) or bring them to the swap tomorrow and Sunday. Each item is assigned a value and students can then use the points they earn to shop for other items at the swap.
All leftover items will be donated to the Crittendon Women’s Union, a think tank and grassroots advocacy organization that helps low-income women attain economic independence.
So, before you toss, think about exchanging instead. You’ll help the environment, and you may just find something you need in the process. Remember: one (wo)man’s junk is another (wo)man’s treasure.
The Eco-Friendly Odds and Ends Swap will be held on Saturday, April 16, and Sunday, April 17, from noon to 5 p.m in the Women’s Resource Center, George Sherman Union basement, 775 Commonwealth Ave. The event is free and open to BU students.
