Career Expo Brings Employers to Campus Tomorrow
With more to offer than jobs, it’s not just for seniors

Jobs—for-profit, nonprofit, and government—are on the menu at tomorrow’s Career Expo, running from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the George Sherman Union’s Metcalf Ballroom.
The Center for Career Development, which is sponsoring the event, expects more than 100 employers to attend (a list of who’s coming can be found online, as well as the jobs they need to fill). The Expo, held once every semester, aims to link all interested students—not just seniors—to employers who might offer jobs, internships that could lead to future jobs, or information that can guide a student’s career selection.
It worked for Christopher Wilcox (COM’12), who snared a summer internship after attending last spring’s Expo. “There was such a diverse range of companies that it was an awesome opportunity to put my name out there and network,” he says. At the Expo he spoke with recruiters from Communispace, a market research firm that organizes online consumer communities, and was selected out of 300 applicants for the internship. The experience, he says, confirmed that “market research is the industry for me, and I hope I can return to Communispace after graduation.”
In advance of tomorrow’s Expo, Center for Career Development staffers are offering résumé and cover letter reviews from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. today at their offices, at 19 Deerfield St. No appointment is necessary; the same holds for the Expo. The Massachusetts Division of Banks has been recruiting at the Expo for about five years “with much success,” says the division’s director of operations, Sheila Frackleton (SED’71). Since 2007, it has hired 16 BU students as interns, 7 of whom were subsequently hired as staffers after they graduated, she says. Of the five interns who worked at the division last summer, three, who are seniors, are still working part-time.
“It is always helpful to meet a student up close and personal” at an Expo, Frackleton says, “to just get a feel for their personality, accomplishments, and career objectives. It is also a great opportunity for students to find out more about an employer, the working environment, and the culture of the agency.”
The Career Expo is tomorrow, Thursday, October 13, from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the George Sherman Union Metcalf Ballroom, 775 Commonwealth Ave., second floor. The Center for Career Development is at 19 Deerfield St., third floor, Kenmore Square, next to the post office.
