The student reporters at the College of Communication had cause to celebrate election night whatever their political affiliation. While supporters around the country rejoiced at Barack Obama’s victory, the broadcast journalists-in-training marked a milestone in their careers when one of their election-night reports aired on CNN.
In the story, graduate student Lynnsey Ross (COM’09) asked the Massachusetts voters waiting in line outside the polls at Myles Standish Hall why they had come to vote in this election. Responses ranged from concerns about the economy to general dissatisfaction with the Bush administration. Ross submitted the video to CNN’s user-generated site iReport, where it was selected to air on TV.
“The producer asked me what made me want to do this story,” Ross says. “I told her that since Massachusetts is considered a blue state, I wanted to know why this election was important to people living here.”
Ross was one of 53 student and faculty journalists contributing to BU Student View, an online network created by COM journalists to showcase and share their election coverage. Tuesday night, students posted videos and live-blog reports on reactions in Kenmore Square, U.S. Senator John Sununu’s concession speech in New Hampshire, and the on-campus response to Obama’s victory.
