Lacrosse Tops BC, Softball Splits Series with Central Connecticut

Junior Sarah Dalton set a new career high with seven points as the number 11 Boston University women’s lacrosse team extended its winning streak to four, defeating Boston College, 17-10, at Nickerson Field on March 26. The Terriers had three runs of three or more consecutive goals, with senior cocaptains Lauren Morton and Molly Collins, junior Steph Walker, and sophomores McKinley Curro, Traci Landy, and Xan Weitzel all contributing goals.

The teams exchanged goals in the early going, playing to a 4-4 tie 10 minutes into the game before the Terriers (7-2) launched a four-goal scoring run. The Eagles (2-6) chipped away at the lead with two goals of their own, but another three scores from BU built an 11-6 lead for the Terriers heading into the half.

Two goals in the opening minutes of play in the second half cut BU’s lead to three goals, but that was the closest BC would get, as the Terriers notched six of the final eight goals in the game.

Dalton tied her career high with six goals and Curro had three, Landy had two goals and two assists, Collins and Morton each notched two scores, and Weitzel had three assists to go along with her goal. Sophomore Rachel Klein made eight saves in goal for the Terriers.

Junior Maura Mahoney led BC in goals with four, and junior Jenna McCabe added two scores and two assists. Junior goalkeeper Katie Monaghan made nine saves while allowing 12 Terrier goals.

The Eagles held the advantage in most categories, edging BU in ground balls (11-10), controlling more draws (18-11), and committing fewer fouls than the Terriers (20-12).

BU gets back to action Saturday, March 29, hosting Vermont at 3 p.m. at Nickerson Field in a game that will be televised on CN8.

Softball Splits with Central Connecticut

The Boston University softball team (9-11) split a doubleheader with Central Connecticut on March 26 in Willimantic, falling 4-0 in the first contest before claiming a 7-5 victory in the second. In the Terriers’ win, sophomore Rachel Moeller was 2-for-3, with one homer and four RBI, including the game winner, and junior Melissa Dubay drove in three runs, with a double and a home run. Freshman hurler Kelley Engman earned the win in the circle. Boston University will host its home opener at the BU Softball Field on Thursday. March 27, against St. Peter’s at 2:30 p.m.

With two outs in the top of the first, Dubay homered down the left line, driving in junior Shayne Lotito in the process and putting the Terriers up by two to start the game. Central Connecticut responded in the bottom half of the inning with a three-run homer to claim a one-run advantage, 3-2.

Dubay struck again in the third to knot the score with a double to left field that plated Lotito, and two at-bats later, Moeller blasted a three-run long ball that put the Terriers up by three, 6-3.

BU maintained a one-run edge, 6-5, heading into the seventh and tacked on one more — an RBI single from Moeller — that gave the Terriers a cushion heading into the bottom of the seventh. Sophomore Megan Currier came into the game in relief and retired the final three batters to pick up the save and help lift BU to the 7-5 victory.

In the first game, BU dropped a 4-0 decision, after giving up runs in the first and third. It was only the third time this season the Terriers have been shut out. Sophomore Cassidi Hardy was charged with the loss, giving up four runs on three hits. Currier came in for the final three innings and allowed no hits. CCSU’s Jaclyn Logan drove in two RBI and Melissa Caron went 2-for-3 with one RBI to lead the Blue Devils on the offensive front.

The doubleheader with St. Peter’s on March 27 at the BU Softball Field will begin at 2:30 p.m. Head coach Shawn Rychcik is 2 wins away from his 100th career victory.
