BUA Counselor Runs in Remembrance
BU Academy’s Karen Foy will run the Boston Marathon in honor of former academy student Haley Morrill, who died last fall
Karen Foy, a counselor at Boston University Academy, says that as a kid she dreaded running the timed mile in gym class. But her attitude has changed. Last year, Foy completed her first Boston Marathon with Team Brigham, in honor of her father, a cancer survivor and a patient at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. This year, she will run the marathon in honor of BU Academy 10th-grader Haley Morrill, who died unexpectedly last fall during the school’s annual retreat to Camp Wing in Duxbury, Mass.
“The loss of Haley has been tremendously difficult, not only for me, but for all of my students and the faculty members here at the academy,” Foy says. “Haley was an amazing kid. We miss her every single day.”
Foy encourages her students to turn Morrill’s death into something positive by making improvements in their own lives. “I decided my way of doing so would be to run the marathon in honor of Haley,” she says. “I feel like I run with Haley every day. Her uncle Mike says that Haley is my marathon copilot.”
Foy reached her Team Brigham fundraising goal of $3,000 and will donate any additional funds to the BUA Haley Murphy Morrill Scholarship fund, which was created after Morrill’s death.
