If the third time is a charm, the BU women’s hockey team could post its best record ever this year. As they enter year three of varsity status, the Terriers are looking to improve on last season’s record (19-12-3 overall, 10-9-1 Hockey East).

After notching a 6-1 exhibition win over the University of Toronto, Mississauga, on September 30, BU opens its season on the road this weekend at the Nike Bauer Women’s Classic in Minnesota. The Terriers play North Dakota today and take on Minnesota on Saturday.

BU lost just two team members to graduation last spring, returning a core of solid players to the lineup.

Cocaptain Gina Kearns (SAR’09) had a successful season for BU, finishing third in points, with 26, on 14 goals, including 4 game-winners. She scored on a power play in BU’s win over Quinnipiac last November and put the game-winning goal in net against UConn for the Terriers’ first Hockey East overtime win.

With a team-high 19 goals, Erin Seman (SMG’09) was the team’s second highest point scorer, with 31. She was named Hockey East and U.S. College Hockey Online Player of the Week after making the game-winning goal against Rensselaer last October. She scored a hat trick on February 4 against Northeastern — the first for a BU player — and finished the season with two three-point games. She averaged 3.6 shots and a point per game.

Team high scorer (34 points) Melissa Anderson (CGS’08) led the squad in assists (22) and penalties (38). She finished 13th in the nation in assists per game (0.79) and 6th in points per game among all rookies (1.21). She had a team-high 10 multiple-point games, including 4 three-point efforts. She was Hockey East’s Rookie of the Week on December 4, after tallying five points in two games and extending her point streak to four games.

Jonnie Bloemers (CGS’08) also posted a successful freshman campaign, netting 14 points on four goals. She tallied three points in back-to-back games against Providence and UConn and was named Hockey East Rookie of the Week on November 20.

On defense, BU finished eighth in the nation on penalty kills, with an 87.7 percentage. Cocaptain Sarah Russell (SMG’09) returns from a seven-point season, including scoring the game-winning goal against Maine on January 27. She missed just one game last season.

Sarah Appleton (CAS’10) played in all 34 games, notching 13 points on three goals to lead BU’s defense in points. She scored two power-play goals and assisted on BU’s overtime goal against Rensselaer.

Julie Poulin (CAS’08) averaged an assist every three games and two shots per game last season. She finished with 12 points on three goals, including one game-winner. She scored an open-net goal against Northeastern to give BU a win in the first round of the Beanpot.

Amanda Shaw (SMG’09) saw action in every game, finishing with seven points and 58 penalty minutes. She was named to Canada’s U-22 team and took on the U.S. U-22 team in three August matchups

In net for BU, Allyse Wilcox (SHA’07) finished the season with an overall record of 10-9-1, a .915 save percentage, and 2.46 goals-against average and was ranked 18th in save percentage. She was named Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week October 9.

Melissa Haber (CGS’08) ended last season with an overall record of 9-3-2 on four shutouts. She ranked among the top 20 goalies in the nation, with a save percentage of .910 and a 2.12 goals-against average. She earned Hockey East Rookie of the Week and Rookie of the Month honors, both in January.

Terrier women’s hockey began in 1973 as one of BU’s first club programs. The University announced the upgrade to varsity sport status in the summer of 2004.
