“West Side Story” turns 50 at Tsai

In honor of the 50th anniversary of the musical West Side Story, Jamie Bernstein, daughter of composer Leonard Bernstein, will try to make her father’s life and work come alive for the BU community at the College of Arts and Sciences today at 6 p.m. Bernstein will read from her father’s letters, offer an analysis of his score, and play sound clips as a preface to an 8 p.m. performance of West Side Story by the student group On Broadway, Boston University’s musical theater company.

Directed by Kate Joyce (CAS’07), the On Broadway rendition features a cast of 32 and a full orchestra comprising instrumental performance students as well as professional musicians, under the direction of graduate student Brett Abigana (CFA’07).

Jamie Bernstein will speak today, March 23, at 6 p.m. in CAS Room 224, and at 8 p.m. West Side Story will be performed at the Tsai Performance Center, 685 Commonwealth Ave. On Saturday, March 24, it will be performed a second time, again at the Tsai at 8 p.m. The production is open to the public; tickets can be purchased at the door or reserved in advance by e-mailing tickets.buwestside@gmail.com. Tickets are $8 for the show, $5 for Bernstein’s lecture, or $10 for both the lecture and the show. For more information, call the Boston University Information Center at 617-353-INFO.
