Kristen Pufahl (SAR’07) has two main loves: health and food. So when the former IT consultant decided to start a new career a few years ago, nutrition was a logical choice.

As it turns out, Pufahl has a knack for it. The Massachusetts Dietetic Association honored her with its 2007 Outstanding Dietetic Student Award for a dietetics internship program. The award, given annually to a dietetic student from each state affiliate of the American Dietetic Association, recognized her work in a 28-week internship at Newton-Wellesley Hospital, where she trained in food service and clinical nutrition.

“I have really enjoyed my time at Newton-Wellesley,” says Pufahl, a Sargent College master’s student in the didactic program in dietetics. During the internship, she assessed patients’ nutritional needs and advised and educated patients and their families on dieting and food selection.

Joan Salge-Blake, a SAR clinical assistant professor, nominated Pufahl for the award. “Her academic success, coupled with her innate qualities of kindness, thoughtfulness, and critical thinking skills, will serve her well as a registered dietitian and health professional,” Salge-Blake says.

This fall Pufahl will work at Newton-Wellesley Hospital as a per diem dietitian and will teach nutrition at a nearby high school.
