Helping Newborns Breathe Easier
Jennifer Bailey (MED’09) was honored for her research on premature infants with respiratory distress syndrome.

Jennifer Bailey (MED’09) recently received one of two inaugural Serchuck Awards from the School of Medicine for her clinical science poster presentation.
The school established the Serchuck Awards to honor exceptional poster presentations by students participating in its Medical Student Summer Research Program. The award is named for Jerome Serchuck, chairman emeritus of MED’s Board of Visitors and a major supporter of the summer research program since its establishment in 2000.
Awards were presented to Bailey and to David Hindson (MED’09) at the Medical Student Summer Research Symposium, an annual winter event that highlights student research.
Bailey’s research focused on premature infants born with respiratory distress syndrome, a common lung disorder that makes it difficult to breathe.
A second-year medical student, Bailey says she has always wanted to work with infants. “It’s just a passion I’ve always had,” she says. “I like the idea of giving special attention in the first year of life.”
