Gerald Lewis Honored by Chelsea

Gerald Lewis has worked behind the scenes for nearly two decades to help provide a quality education to thousands of Chelsea schoolchildren. On October 29, Lewis, associate comptroller in the BU Office of the Vice President for Financial Affairs and treasurer and vice chairman of the management team of the BU/Chelsea Partnership, received the Contributing Stakeholder of the Year award at the All-Chelsea Awards for his dedication to the Chelsea school district.

Through the Boston University/Chelsea Partnership, since 1989 BU has managed the Chelsea public schools at the invitation of the Chelsea School Committee, the only example of a private university accepting responsibility for the day-to-day management of a public school system. The partnership aims to ensure that Chelsea schoolchildren are ready to learn and teachers are equipped to teach important subject matter through a coherent plan of instruction.

The All-Chelsea Awards recognize the contributions to the community of individuals, businesses, and organizations. The Contributing Stakeholder award is given to a person, business, or organization from outside the community making a significant contribution to Chelsea.

“Working with the BU/Chelsea Partnership was something that matched my prior background of working in municipal finance,” says Lewis, who has been involved with the program from the beginning. “It was a natural fit.”

Lewis has had a key role in the successful negotiation of labor contracts, the successful completion of building projects, and maintaining balanced budgets, among other tasks.
