BMC Holds Free Cancer Screening

BMC’s Kathy Finn is organizing information sessions for Saturday, October 13.

For the seventh year in a row, Kathy Finn, director of cancer clinical research and support services at Boston Medical Center, hopes that BMC’s free cancer screenings, held this year on Saturday, October 13, will detect cancer in its earliest, most treatable stages.

Screenings and information sessions will take place from 8 a.m. to noon in the Moakley Building, 830 Harrison Ave., on the Medical Campus. “It is a busy morning,” Finn says, “but participants really find it helpful.” In addition to screening for breast, prostate, and head-and-neck cancer, clinicians will provide other services, such as blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol testing, as well as dental screening.

The screenings are targeted at those 40 and older who lack insurance or access to health care, Finn says, or simply don’t have time to visit a doctor.

Finn hopes that knowledge about preventive care gained at Saturday’s event will have a ripple effect. She wants participants to leave with increased understanding of the importance of cancer screenings, health care, and healthy living and then tell others about what they learned.

“Our mission is to educate the public about the importance of cancer screening,” she says. “It is one of the most important agendas a cancer program can have.”
