Blogging About Big Tobacco
SPH’s Michael Siegel takes a critical look at the antismoking movement in his blog, The Rest of the Story.

Michael Siegel doesn’t believe smoking is a healthy thing, but he doesn’t think the antismoking movement’s agenda is so great either, calling it questionable and sometimes misleading. Siegel, a professor of social and behavioral sciences at the School of Public Health, has made smoking — and antismoking — the focus of his blog.
With 21 years of experience researching tobacco’s uses and effects, Siegel has created The Rest of the Story: tobacco news analysis and commentary. Keeping an eye on the antismoking movement’s tactics, which he describes as “increasingly extreme,” Siegel posts his expert opinion on tobacco policy.
His blog, which highlights issues of both personal safety and personal freedom, and even delves into issues of class, has caught the attention of news sources such as ABC News 20/20, Reuters, and the New York Sun.
“My point,” Siegel posted on April 16, “is simply that there is a systematic effort to try to put doubt in the minds of the public about the legitimacy and integrity (and financial independence) of anyone who expresses any opposition to a proposed smoking ban.”
