Greening the gateway
Renovation planned for Commonwealth Avenue

“We consider Kenmore Square to be the gateway to Boston University from the east,” says Executive Vice President Joseph Mercurio. “It’s vital to our long-term well-being at the University.”
Decades of collaboration between the University and the city of Boston have already brought about major changes throughout Kenmore Square, and now the focus has shifted to Commonwealth Avenue, between Kenmore Square and Amory Street. Funded by the state’s Transportation Improvement Program, and in collaboration with the Boston Public Works Department and the Massachusetts Highway Department, the streets and sidewalks will be reconstructed to make BU’s urban campus more attractive and more pedestrian-friendly.
