Sarah Kerkian (COM’07) recently pitched in to make the Somerville Park’s playground a better place for local students.

Kerkian, along with many graduate and undergraduate students from Professor Jo Doherty’s community relations class, created Rebuild Our Community (ROC) as a class project with a focus on community service and marketing. After Kerkian, the operations manager, selected the site and coordinated the clean-up day with the Somerville Parks Department and East Somerville Community School, the newly formed group was able to complete their project on Saturday, April 5. They renovated the student playground that recent vandalism had left destroyed and presented students with art supplies donated by local businesses. Kerkian said she spent much of the day raking and picking up debris on the park grounds. ROC members also hosted an unveiling of a student-created art mural by the East Somerville Community School’s Beautification Club.

“[We wanted] to say thank you to them and give them some acknowledgement,” said Kerkian. “And also, we wanted to instill the message to be good community citizens and take care of their playground.”
