Ben Dauksewicz wants to Help Now

After Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast, Ben Dauksewicz (CAS’07) decided that BU needed a student organization specifically to respond to disasters. He created Help Now, which is devoted to helping disaster victims.
Dauksewicz and members of his group met a week after Hurricane Katrina to brainstorm about ways they could help rebuild the futures of the thousands of Americans affected.
Help Now has already raised funds at a show by the BU student comedy troupe Slow Children at Play and at an off-campus show with X-rated hypnotist Frank Santos. In addition, the group is helping Tulane students at the University get acclimated.
Dauksewicz, of Haverhill, Mass., says his main goal for October is to organize a Halloween dance and fundraiser, as well as plan other benefit concerts and events. Last week the group collected money at the George Sherman Union.
“I don’t want this to just be a Hurricane Katrina group — I want this to be a group that lasts from year to year to respond to disasters in the future,” says Dauksewicz. “A lot of people want to help, but they don’t know how. We want to come together and make this a bigger effort.”
