About

Fathimath Anan Ahmed (Anu)’s research interests include topics of care, family intimacy, madness, personhood, ethics, morality, and subjectivity, as well as psychological and medical anthropology. Her dissertation research is focused on studying experiences of care and mental illness outside of clinical spaces in Māle, Maldives. Anu is interested in highlighting the subjective and affective lives of specific persons as well as the broader social, political, and economic transformations that shape these individual lives.

Before joining Boston University in 2017, Anu attended UWC Red Cross Nordic in Flekke, Norway (2010-2012) and then served a year in the Red Cross and Red Crescent Society of the Maldives. Anu holds a B.A. (Honors) in Anthropology from Bates College (2013-2017) where she was a Davis UWC Scholar. During her undergraduate years at Bates, she conducted transnational ethnographic research on medical and religious practices of Muslim Maldivians in north and central Maldives and in Kerala, India. Anu was inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa Society in 2017.
