SSW MP 773
Graduate Prerequisites: SSW MP759 MP 773 is designed to provide students with knowledge and skills necessary for effective leadership, with an emphasis on promoting equity, inclusion, and anti-oppressive practices to advance social justice and the effectiveness of macro-level systems. Theories and styles of leadership are examined and critiqued as students work to identify and further develop their own leadership values, skills, and styles. Students will acquire skills for effective leadership aimed toward dismantling conditions that enable racism, heterocentrism, sexism, and other forms of oppression. They will also develop the management skills necessary for working with team members, board members, community members, and other stakeholders toward achieving shared goals and building an effective organizational culture that embraces and incorporates a wide range of identities, experiences, and perspectives. This course provides an opportunity for personal and shared growth and development in addition to the acquisition of advanced-level skills and knowledge. A variety of learning activities, including viewing videos, dialoging with guest speakers, analyzing case studies, small-and-large -group discussions, readings, self-assessments, reflective writing, and in-class presentations, will address the needs of students with diverse learning styles and preferences. Learning in this course will draw upon a wide range of voices and perspectives, centering those (women, BIPOC, LGBTQ+, etc.) that have been traditionally marginalized in leadership and management education. Learning material is drawn from a diverse array of sources, including popular culture, think tanks, and academia.
