Graduate Prerequisites: (SPHPH717 OR SPHEP714) - This course provides a foundation in traditional infectious disease epidemiology, focusing on practical issues in the study and control of infectious diseases in populations. Students learn the biologic, clinical, and epidemiologic principles underlying infectious disease transmission, distribution, and prevention. The course covers epidemiologic study designs specific to infectious diseases, including sources of bias, measures of association, and interpretation of infectious disease studies, as well as public health surveillance, outbreak investigation, and mathematical models of infectious disease transmission, including compartmental models and the basic reproduction number (R₀). Students apply these methods through analysis of real infectious disease outbreaks, workshops, and critical evaluation of the scientific literature. Specific infectious diseases of contemporary national and global public health importance are used to illustrate key concepts.
