Head and Neck Cancer

For MS-SLP students only or with consent of the instructor. This course provides an in-depth exploration of the evaluation and treatment of individuals with head and neck cancer from the perspective of a speech-language pathologist. Students will examine the anatomical, physiological, and psychological impacts of head and neck cancer, as well as the effects of medical cancer treatments—including surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and their combinations—on communication and swallowing function. Emphasis will be placed on interdisciplinary collaboration and patient-centered care to optimize functional outcomes and quality of life. Through interactive case studies, simulations, and interdisciplinary training sessions, students will develop critical skills in clinical reasoning, treatment planning, and collaborative decision-making for managing these complex cases.
