  • SED RS 755: Psychometrics
    Provides instruction in psychometric and statistical methods of measurement. Introduces two psychometric methods -- Classical Test Theory and Item Response Theory (IRT) -- and will cover a range of measurement issues, such as reliability, validity, bias, and standard-setting.
  • SED RS 900: Ind Study
    Prereq: Approval of advisor. Signed plan of study must be submitted in advance of registration on an Independent study form obtained from the SED Office of Records. Variable cr.
  • SED SC 105: Integrated Science I
    Laboratory-discussion course. Analysis of kinematics, conservation laws, properties of light, atoms and molecules, the chemistry and properties of materials. Coursework closely tied to laboratory experiments. Laboratories include computer-based laboratory instruction and computer simulations.
  • SED SC 106: Integrated Science II
    Analysis of evolution of stars, the universe, and planetary systems. Behavior of planet Earth, its physical description, ecology, evolution of life, genetics, and the properties of living systems. Students engage in laboratory experiments, group work, and computer simulations.
  • SED SC 375: Exploring Science Teaching: A Practical Experience
    Students will explore science teaching through observation of secondary school science classrooms and, where possible, through participation in the classroom instruction. Readings discussed in seminar will prepare students to interact in the classroom and to prepare lesson plans. 2 cr.
  • SED SC 507: Student-Teaching Half Practicum: Science, 5-8
    Student teaching 5-8: a full-time experience in a selected school under joint supervision of a cooperating practitioner and a University representative. Minimum 150 hours required. Open only to matriculated students who have completed prerequisites. 4 cr.

  • SED SC 509: Student-Teaching Practicum: Science, 5-8
    Student teaching 5-8: a full-time experience in a selected school under joint supervision of a cooperating practitioner and a University representative. Minimum 300 hours required. Open only to matriculated graduate students who have completed prerequisites. 8 cr.
  • SED SC 510: Student-Teaching Practicum: Science, 8-12
    Student teaching 8-12: a full-time experience in a selected secondary school under joint supervision of a cooperating practitioner and a University representative. Minimum 300 hours required. Open only to matriculated graduate students who have completed prerequisites. 8 cr.
  • SED SC 513: Field Studies: Science
    Principles of ecology and geology in a field setting. Emphasis on activities useful for teaching environmental science. Chemical, physical, and biological factors influencing the interrelationship of plants and animals. Field trips, individual project, and laboratory discussion. Variable cr, either sem.

  • SED SC 523: Introduction to Mentoring
    This course expands on skills learned in SCI521 and teaches experienced Learning Assistants (LAs) mentoring strategies as they work with first- semester LAs. Students are responsible for weekly readings, observations, and meetings with your mentee. Students meet with course faculty to provide insight into improved implementation of LAs.   • SED SC 539: Explaining Science: a Philosophical Perspective
    This course provides a basic overview of the history, philosophy, and sociology of science (HPSS, sometimes called "science studies") especially as these subjects relate to science teaching and learning. 4 cr.
  • SED SC 570: Science Teaching Methods I
    This course emphasizes pedagogical content knowledge through the exploration of methods for teaching science within disciplines (biology, chemistry, general science, and physics) at the middle and high school levels. Emphasis is on the design of learning experiences that integrate intellectually sound and developmentally appropriate content, scientific thinking strategies, reflective practice, and assessment. 4 cr.
  • SED SC 572: Science Methods II: Teaching in the Science Disciplines
    This course emphasizes the practical applications of instructional strategies and teaching skills presented in science methods I. It emphasizes the pedagogical content knowledge in the respective disciplines as they are being practiced in the student teaching practicum. 4 cr.
  • SED SC 575: Introduction to Science Education
    Provides an introduction to modern learning theory emphasizing inquiry learning in the classroom for science and engineering. The four-credit option includes a pre-practicum for pre-service teachers. Var cr.
  • SED SC 576: Science Teaching Pre-Practicum
    Pre-service teachers will participate in a pre-practicum experience in local schools and a biweekly seminar where they will have the opportunity to study and practice science teaching methods addressed in SC570: Science Teaching with an emphasis on equity and diversity in science education. Methods. 2 cr.
  • SED SE 250: Disability, Education, and Public Policy
    Students will examine how disabilities impact students, their families, and their educational/community participation; analyze the historical treatment of individuals with disabilities; discuss contemporary ethical issues; learn federal legislation; and develop a foundational understanding of inclusive educational practices.   • SED SE 251: Special Education and Adolescents
    Students will analyze the impact of disabilities on adolescents, their families, and educational/community participation; learn federal legislation; and, explore behavior management/instructional strategies to ensure that future secondary education teachers will work effectively with all individuals within a diverse student body.   • SED SE 315: Field Experience in Special Education: Severe Disabilities
    Designed to develop skills to work with students with severe disabilities, analyze students' learning profiles, examine service delivery models, and learn about instructional and behavior management strategies. 50 hours of fieldwork plus seminar. Prereq: SE 250. 2 cr.
