SED ME 363: Problem Solving in Mathematics
This course explores the teaching and learning of mathematics through solving sets of challenging problems. Topics include research on problem solving and how its design and implementation can be supported in the classroom. Effective Fall 2018, this course fulfills a single unit in each of the following BU Hub areas: Quantitative Reasoning I, Oral and/or Signed Communication, Critical Thinking. -
SED ME 501: Tips for Math Teachers: Grades 1-6
This course will explore the mathematics tutoring profession and the methodologies that make for an effective grade 3-12 or undergraduate mathematics tutor. Students will develop and increase the knowledge of the key ideas within mathematics teaching as well as discuss difficulties students may experience with these ideas, techniques for diagnosing the difficulties, and strategies for crafting individualized plans set to help students improve their understanding, and performance. Student will gain field experience and have an option of becoming a Massachusetts Certified Tutor. 2cr. -
SED ME 503: Mathematical Reasoning in the Elementary Grades: Number Systems
Designed for students majoring in early childhood education, elementary education, special education, and deaf education who are preparing to become teachers of children in grades 1-6. Topics include place value, whole numbers and operations, fractions, decimals, and elementary number theory. The emphasis is on exploring, explaining, and justifying mathematical ideas and connecting these ideas to the elementary classroom. 4 cr. -
SED ME 504: Mathematical Reasoning in the Elementary Grades: Algebra, Geometry, & Statistics
Designed for students majoring in elementary education, special education, and deaf education who are preparing to become teachers of children in grades 1-6. Topics include pre-algebra, proportional reasoning, geometry, measurement, and statistics. The emphasis is on exploring, explaining, and justifying mathematical ideas and connecting these ideas to the elementary classroom. Prereq: SED ME 503. 4 cr. -
SED ME 507: Student-Teaching Practicum: Mathematics, 5-8
Student teaching: a full-time experience in a selected school under joint supervision of a mentor supervising practitioner and a university program supervisor. Fldwk w/ seminar. Meets minimum required hours by DESE. 8 cr. -

SED ME 525: Assessment in Mathematics
Introduces students to the theory and practice of assessment in mathematics. This course prepares teachers to apply research-supported assessment techniques in their classrooms. Discussions about important issues in assessment of students' mathematical learning are included. 2 cr. -
SED ME 530: Equitable Pedagogies in STEM Education
Focuses on the examination of the teaching and learning of mathematics and science in schools with diverse populations. This course considers how race, class, language, and culture affect students' opportunities to learn mathematics and science. Challenges common to urban districts are studied. Instructional activities for teaching mathematics and science to diverse populations are analyzed. 2 cr. -
SED ME 544: Early Childhood Mathematics, Pre-K-Grade 2
This course aims to support pre-service teachers to learn how to teach mathematics in ways that enable students in PreK-grades 2. This course includes theories of mathematical thinking and learning; methods for observing, interviewing, and examining children's thinking; the key ideas of mathematics and their development; and principles of early childhood pedagogy to build on and advance children's mathematical ideas. 4cr. -
SED ME 545: Methods of Teaching Mathematics: Elementary
This course aims to support pre-service teachers to learn how to teach mathematics in ways that enable students in grades 1-6 to develop deep, conceptual understanding of key mathematical ideas, fluency with mathematical procedures, and productive mathematics identities. In particular, the focus is on learning to lead mathematical discussions that build on and advance children's mathematical ideas. Prereq: CAS MA107 or SED ME503. 4 cr. -
SED ME 546: Methods of Teaching Mathematics: Middle School
Focuses on examining the role of a middle school mathematics teacher from both theoretical and practical perspectives. Topics include exploring strategies for maintaining productive learning environments, developing and implementing lessons effectively, and assessing students' mathematical thinking. Teaching enactments are an integral part of the course. -
SED ME 547: Methods of Teaching Mathematics: High School
Focuses on examining the role of a high school mathematics teacher from both theoretical and practical perspectives. Topics include exploring strategies for maintaining productive learning environments, developing and implementing lessons effectively, and assessing students' mathematical thinking. Teaching enactments are an integral part of the course. -
SED ME 551: Mathematics for Special Needs Students
Examines programs for mathematics students with special needs in grades K-12, focusing on gifted students, students with learning disabilities, and their intersection. Topics include diagnostic techniques, alternative curricula, appropriate instructional strategies, and classroom organization techniques. 4cr. -
SED ME 558: Mathematics Curriculum: Program Issues, Trends
Analysis of historical, mathematical, and psychological factors influencing grades K-12 mathematics curricula. Focuses on national and international standards, research on learning and teaching with understanding, and integrated curricula. 4 cr. -
SED ME 559: Mathematics for Teaching: Geometry
Revisits geometry from an advanced perspective, preparing teachers to teach geometry with understanding. Topics such as transformations, proof, Euclidean, and non-Euclidean geometries, manipulative materials, technology, standards, and curriculum in the teaching and learning of geometry. 4 cr. -
SED ME 560: Mathematics for Teaching: Algebra
Revisits school algebra from an advanced perspective, preparing teachers to teach algebra with understanding. Topics include variables, patterns, functions, linear algebra, manipulatives, technology, standards, and curriculum in the teaching and learning of algebra. 4 cr. -
SED ME 563: Problem Solving in Mathematics
This course explores the teaching and learning of mathematics through solving sets of challenging problems. Topics include: research on problem solving and how its design and implementation can be supported in the classroom. 4cr. -
SED ME 565: Mathematics for Teaching: Calculus
Revisits calculus from an advanced perspective, preparing teachers to understand calculus from the perspective of a student and a teacher. Topics such as limits derivatives, integrals, approximation, and applications, and modeling are revisited with a focus on their connections. 4cr. -
SED ME 568: The Design of Secondary Mathematics Curriculum
Considers how to design tasks that compel students to explore challenging mathematical ideas, make new connections, develop arguments and justifications, and spur curiosity and delight by examining the design principles of high-quality mathematics curriculum. 4 cr. -
SED ME 589: Designing Professional Development Programs in Mathematics Education
Students examine models for the professional development of mathematics teachers; conduct needs assessment of the teachers in their target groups; and design professional development programs that respond to those needs. Programs focus on upgrading mathematical content knowledge and pedagogical and assessment practices. 4cr.
