• SED SP 650: Understanding Reading Difficulties
  Takes a critical orientation to examine reading programs, instructional approaches, informal literacy assessments, and factors that influence reading development: decoding, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. Explores implications of social, political and cultural contexts on understanding literacy practices. 2 cr.
• SED SP 685: Democracy and Education
  Provides a social, historical, legal and political context for understanding education practice and policies. Addresses issues of equity, access, civil rights, moral and ethical considerations, rights of students, parents and teachers, and the larger purpose of public education in our democracy. 2 cr.
• SED SP 710: Assistive Technology
  Introduces Assistive Technology (AT) solutions that can support students with disabilities in fully accessing and progressing in standards-based curriculum activities. Include current laws and IEP considerations. 1 cr.
• SED TL 508: Methods of Teaching English as a Second Language (ESL), 5-12
  Teaching methodologies for English as a Second Language at the middle- and high-school levels, including techniques for developing language skills, content-based language teaching, evaluation and adaption of materials, planning and assessment. Students participate in a field-based component. Course is restricted to students in an ESL Licensure program. 4 cr.
• SED TL 509: Foundations of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) Pedagogy
  This course offers a foundation in the approaches, methods, and materials for the teaching and learning of second and foreign languages. We will focus on topics that provide teachers with a knowledge base that can be adapted for a variety of educational settings and student populations. The goal is to learn about different topics related to language instruction and to apply that knowledge while teaching. 4 cr.
• SED TL 512: Introduction to Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL)
  Survey of current classroom practices in computer-assisted language learning (CALL), Focus on relationships among teaching, learning, and technological environments involving second and foreign language learners and teachers. 4 cr.
• SED TL 520: Teaching English Language Learners
  Focus on current theory/research related to teaching English language learners and the implications for effective language, literacy, and content-area assessment and instructional practices in Sheltered English Immersion (SEI) classrooms. For students seeking licensure in Early Childhood, Elementary Education, and Special Education. 4 cr.
• SED TL 525: Teaching English Language Learners in Middle/High Schools
  Focus on current theory/research related to teaching English language learners and the implications for effective language, literacy, and content-area assessment and instructional practices in Sheltered English Immersion (SEI) classrooms in middle/high schools. For students seeking licensure in the content areas at the 5-12 level. 4 cr.
• SED TL 530: School Leadership: English Language Learners
  Focus on the responsibilities of school leaders for promoting the academic achievement of English language learners. Emphasis on analysis of home, community and school factors that influence the education of this student population, and identifying and evaluating best practices in assessment and instruction in the Sheltered English Immersion (SEI) classroom. Designed for those seeking licensure as a principal/assistant principal and/or supervisor/director. 2 cr.
• SED TL 580: Student-Teaching Practicum I: ESL, Pre-K-6
  Supervised student teaching. Minimum of 150 hours required. Graduate Prereq: Open only to matriculated graduate students who have completed prerequisites restricted to students in an ESL Licensure program. 4 cr.
• SED TL 581: Student-Teaching Practicum II: ESL, Pre-K-6
  Supervised student teaching. Minimum of 150 hours required. Graduate Prereq: Open only to matriculated graduate students who have completed prerequisites in an ESL Licensure program. 2 cr.
• SED TL 582: Student-Teaching Practicum I: ESL, 5-12
  Supervised student teaching. Minimum of 150 hours required. Can be taken only in conjunction with a Practicum I course. Graduate Prereq: Open only to matriculated graduate students who have completed prerequisites in ESL licensure program. 4 cr.
• SED TL 583: Student-Teaching Practicum II: ESL, 5-12
  Supervised student teaching. Minimum of 150 hours required. Can be taken only in conjunction with a Practicum I course. Graduate Prerequisites: Open only to matriculated graduate students who have completed prerequisites in ESL licensure program. 2 cr.
• SED TL 589: Internship/Apprenticeship in TESOL
  Supervised field experience for students holding professional appointments. Must meet field- of-knowledge and professional preparation that are equivalent to certification sequence. Sections indicate grade levels of licensure (Pre-K-8, or 5-12). Graduate Prereq: Open only to matriculated graduate students who have completed prerequisites. Var cr.
• SED TL 608: Student-Teaching Practicum: Modern Foreign Languages, Pre-K-6
  Full-time student-teaching in selected schools. Six weeks; Minimum 150 hours.
• SED TL 609: Student-Teaching Practicum: Modern Foreign Languages, 5-12
  Full-time student-teaching in selected high schools. Six weeks; Minimum 150 hours required.
• SED TL 610: Student-Teaching Practicum: TESOL, Pre-K-6
  Full-time student-teaching in selected schools. Six weeks; Minimum 150 hours required.
• SED TL 611: Student-Teaching Practicum: TESOL, 5-12
  Full-time student-teaching in selected high schools. Six weeks; Minimum 150 hours required.
• SED TL 612: Student Teaching Practicum and Seminar for Domestic Students
  Supervised student teaching in a college or adult education program in English as a second language. Graduate Prereq: Open only to matriculated graduate students who have completed prerequisites. 6 cr.
• SED TL 614: Field Experience and Seminar for International Students
  Field observation in a college or adult education program in English as a second language. Open only to matriculated international graduate students who have completed prerequisites. 4 cr.
