The course examines how a model of citizen action (Project Citizen) can be used to promote active and informed citizenship among youth and adults. Students apply that model to analyze and influence a current public policy of their choice. This course describes the role of language, literacy, and communication in globalization by examining their use across cultural, political, and geographic boundaries, and highlighting how language and cultural forms flow in global networks and across cultural boundaries; constructing transcultural and transnational student identities. 4cr, 1st sem. -
SED SO 566: Developing Historical Literacy, 5-12
Students will investigate the history, subspecialties, pedagogy, and research in history education for middle and high school, as related to historical thinking, literacy, and problem solving. Students will develop an understanding of historical literacy, historical thinking, inquiry, and problem solving. Students will develop competencies in developing and presenting research-based history lessons. Effective Fall 2019, this course fulfills a single unit in each of the following BU Hub areas: Social Inquiry II, Oral and/or Signed Communication, Creativity/Innovation. -

Examines curriculum and teaching methods in social science education, grades 5-12. Students develop and present research-based lessons and unit plans in history, civics, economics, geography, and other social sciences. Development of teaching materials and classroom techniques for social studies education. Effective Fall 2020, this course fulfills a single unit in each of the following BU Hub areas: Digital/Multimedia Expression, Ethical Reasoning, Teamwork/Collaboration. -
SED SO 572: Curriculum and Special Methods for History and Social Science, 5-12
Reviews traditional and recent Examines curriculum materials in history or curriculum and teaching methods in social science education for middle, junior, and senior high school. Students develop competencies in developing and presenting research-based lessons and unit plans in history, civics, economics, geography, and the other social sciences. Analysis of curricular goals for grades 5-12. Development of new teaching materials and classroom techniques for social studies education at various age levels. Effective Fall 2019, this course fulfills a single unit in each of the following BU Hub areas: Ethical Reasoning, Digital/Multimedia Expression, Teamwork/Collaboration. This course must be taken for 4 credits. -
SED SO 573: Teaching about the Cold War in American History
The course is designed for history education majors of anyone interested in examining The Cold War period (1946-1963) through Hollywood movies (Dr. Strangelove, Seven Days in May, High Noon) and television (The Army McCarthy Hearings, Blacklisting, Hollywood and the Second Red Scare). Culminating activity will be the production of a non-tradiational unit on the Cold War. 4cr, 1st sem. -
