Dancing in Their Idols’ Shoes

BU’s miXx K-Pop Cover Dance Crew re-creates music videos step-by-step

Pop culture often takes surprising turns, but who would have expected Korean pop music videos to inspire an active campus group of students dancing in tightly choreographed video after tightly choreographed video?

Members of BU’s miXx K-Pop Cover Dance Crew put in hours rehearsing the dances from their favorite K-Pop videos, then they audition to appear in the video re-creations, which can include anywhere from five to more than a dozen kicking, gyrating, fist-pumping dancers. The capital X in the group’s name stands for cross-cultural sharing of Korean culture.

“It’s a way for all of us to love what we love together,” says member Alexlyn Dundas (CAS’14, MET’18).

The miXx YouTube channel features dozens of videos the group has made since they first came together in 2013. They trade the wild (and probably expensive) backdrops of the original videos for locations around BU, like obscure corners of 808 Comm Ave in a take on TVXQ’s “Mirotic” and the courtyard between FitRec and Agganis Arena for their version of Red Velvet’s “Happiness.”

The students also pull together the costumes, from simple white shirts and skinny black ties to an almost Village-People-esque group featuring a basketball player, a yacht captain, a doctor, and—is that a BU chef? And those are in just one video, a January cover of “Dope” by BTS.

K-Pop was already a worldwide phenomenon when former BU student PSY kicked it into overdrive with his global hit “Gangnam Style.” (PSY spent one semester here in 1997 under his real name, Park Jae-sang.)

Group president Eunice Her (Questrom’16) says miXx is open to anyone who loves K-Pop videos and is willing to put in the work to perfect the necessary dancing. The group practices Wednesdays and Saturdays when school is in session, with supplementary practices to review each week’s choreography. Members also are happy to have nondancers to help with video and other off-screen duties, as well as live showcase performances on campus in fall and spring.

Awesome! My teenager loves K-Pop and I don’t know much about it. When we were on vacation in HI recently, she was wearing a Got7 shirt and an older woman (grey haired) asked me about it. This older woman said she too loves K-Pop. That was a surprise to me.
