ENG Student Dies

Freshman was award-winning high school student

Anthony Barksdale II (ENG’16) earned the Coach’s Award for varsity basketball, a U.S. Marine Corps Scholastic Excellence Award, and a Humanities Award at his New Hampshire high school.

A BU freshman died early Saturday morning, three hours after being transported from an apartment in Allston to St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center. Anthony Barksdale II (ENG’16) was pronounced dead at the hospital. Boston EMS responded to a call shortly before 1 a.m. to 22 Wadsworth St.

The death is being investigated by Boston Police. BU Police say there was no indication of foul play.

“Whenever there is a death of one of our own it affects all of us,” says Kenneth Elmore (SED’87), BU dean of students. “Our entire community is deeply saddened. I hope that students will look out for each other. I hope they will use the resources that are available here, and I hope they reach out to friends, parents, and loved ones.”

Barksdale, who lived in the Towers residence at 140 Bay State Rd., was a 2012 graduate of Souhegan High School in Amherst, N.H., where he earned the Coach’s Award for varsity basketball, a U.S. Marine Corps Scholastic Excellence Award, and a Humanities Award. He was a member of Sigma Alpha Mu.

Anthony was one of the first people I met at BU. I never got to know him that well but he brightened my day every time we crossed paths. I studied with him for the CH131 exam. We saw each other two days ago in the dining hall and said hi.
I don’t know what to say.
To everyone who reads this, even if he was never even a blip on your radar, I ask you to come to the memorial service. Tony was a good man and he deserves the utmost respect.

I am a parent of student at BU. I ran into Tony often in hallways of 140 Bay State Road. What a great kid he was. Respectful, cheerful, upbeat. My heart goes out to all his friends and family. May there be peace with them in this difficult time. He will be missed!

Tony was one of the sweetest people I knew. I transferred into ENG and he was in my first class, always with a shining smile. He worked so hard. We were doing physics just last week, and I can’t believe he’s gone. I miss you bud.

Today at church, I prayed for Anthony, for his family, as well as for the students at BU. One cannot imagine the deep sadness and numbing loss of a child. I will continue to pray for God’s comfort and healing most especially for Anthony’s parents.
I am very sorry for your loss.

From a BU ENG ’16 parent.

My condolences to Tony’s family. I didn’t know him but as a mother of a college student we parents worry every time we send them off and expect them to come home safely. I will continue praying for the family and hope that one day they will just remember the great person he was, without hurting.
To his mom, He is gone but never forgotten. RIP Anthony

What a tragic event for the entire BU community. As a recent alumnus and former RA of Towers, I can only imagine how difficult this is for everyone involved. I keep thinking about what if it had been one of my guys who this happened to, as it can happen to anyone, and it shakes me to the core. My thoughts and well wishes go out to Tony’s family, friends, floor mates, and all of the Towers and ENG community as they struggle during this difficult time.
