A rise in the number of late-night assaults in areas near the Boston University campus has prompted the Boston University Police Department to increase the visibility of night patrols. Chief Thomas Robbins says his officers are working closely with officers from the Boston Police Department and the Brookline Police Department to arrest the assailants. Until police are certain that the suspects have been apprehended, Robbins advises all members of the BU community to take precautions, especially when walking late at night.

The BUPD crime log for March 26 through April 6 is below. The next campus crime log will appear on Wednesday, April 23.

11:31 PM 4/6/2008 Sun ARSON OF DWELLING HOUSE c266 S1 Arrest 1019 COMMONWEALTH AV Residential ALLEY WAY
Officers William Campanella and Brandon Stone were dispatched for a report of a fire alarm. Upon arrival they observed smoke in the building with a smell of fire and the fire alarm was sounding. At this time, the occupants were evacuating into the street. A second call came into BUPD dispatch stating that there was a fire on the side of the building by the alleyway between 1019 Commonwealth Ave and 270 Babcock St. Officer Stone took a chemical fire extinguisher and ran into the alleyway where the fire was. Upon closer inspection it was determined that the fire was contained to an emergency exit doorway that is in a small alcove on the northeast side of the building. In addition to the doorway being on fire, there is a vent on the alcove ceiling which was also on fire and sending smoke into the building. Officer Stone observed a male party sitting 10 to 12 feet away from the fire watching it, making no attempt to extinguish the flames or sound any alarm to notify anyone of the existing danger despite the fact that a security guard was present in the lobby of the building, as well as an emergency police call box phone on the exterior of the building. While extinguishing the flames, several occupants of the building attempted to make egress out of this emergency door, but could not due to the fire and smoke blocking the doorway. They were directed by Officer Stone to the next closest exit. While Officer Stone was extinguishing the fire, the male subject, began yelling and made a statement that he had lighted the fire with a cigarette. THE SUSPECT was becoming combative and unruly as the crowd gathered from exiting the building was placed into custody. THE SUSPECT was intoxicated, a bottle of vodka was found burned near the fire remnants. Boston Fire arrived on location and began to extinguish the smoldering ashes, the vent above the alcove and ventilate the building. Upon closer observation it appeared that cardboard and blankets were on fire. There was visible charring and burn marks to the building and doorway. THE SUSPECT was transported to the station for booking and charged with Arson and Disorderly Conduct.
